Smart and Simple CBD

CBD might be the fastest-growing ingredient on the market today. Some argue CBD may be the fastest-growing ingredient in the history of the dietary supplement industry, likely only rivaled by the dawn of glucosamine for supporting joint health. In a 2019 survey by the Nutrition Business Journal, half of all respondents confirmed being familiar with CBD, while 65% of supplement companies surveyed (primarily human) confirmed plans to develop a CBD/Hemp product in the next 1-2 years. Just as the human supplement market has experienced an explosion of CBD products, we anticipate seeing a wide variety of new CBD products launched specifically for horses.

Many horse owners choose to supplement their horses’ diet with CBD to support a normal response to inflammation and to help address discomfort associated with normal exercise and aging. It is also thought to support a calm, relaxed disposition in horses that experience stress and anxiety. Selecting a CBD supplement can be tricky, with quality being a major concern for consumers. This is why SmartPak has been selective about the CBD products we have offered, and also why we’ve chosen to go a step further by leading the pack and launching CBD products with first-of-its-kind research supporting the safe use of CBD ingredients in horses. We’ve engaged an independent third-party lab to test both the CBD raw material and the finished product to ensure purity and quality. The result is the creation of our own Smart & Simple™ CBD which offers 150mg of CBD per serving.

What is CBD and where does it come from?
CBD, or cannabidiol (can-nuh-buh-DYE-all), is a compound that comes from a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant known as hemp. Hemp has been selectively grown for thousands of years for its high fiber quality, rich nutrient profile of its seeds, and high CBD to low THC content. This is in contrast to the strain of Cannabis known as marijuana, which has low levels of CBD and high levels of THC, the psychoactive component. CBD is just one of over a hundred cannabinoids (cuh-NAH-buh-noids) produced by Cannabis. Cannabinoids that come from plants, or phytocannabinoids, are believed to mimic those made by the body itself, known as endocannabinoids.

How does CBD work?
Scientists have recently discovered that all species in the animal kingdom (except insects) possess an Endocannabinoid System. This is a complex cell-signaling system that serves to regulate a wide range of functions and processes, including mood, movement, sleep, appetite, and even the body’s response to inflammation. Through a network of receptors, experts believe the main role of the Endocannabinoid System is to help maintain homeostasis, or, stability within the body.  Research suggests the plant-based CBD exerts positive effects on many systems to help keep things running smoothly such as the nervous system, the immune system, the GI tract, and more.

What benefits does a CBD supplement have for horses?
Studies are currently being published about the effect of CBD in dogs and are underway in horses. In addition to safety and dosing, scientists are looking at the impact of cannabidiol on comfort and mobility as well as behavior and confidence. Further rounds of studies will assess the role of CBD in GI health and immune response.
